Breaking Horizon is a multimedia installation that invites audiences to inhabit a different time-space orientation. In Chinese, the day before yesterday is “the day in front,” the day after tomorrow is “the day behind,” a spatial grammar that corresponds to the posture of Walter Benjamin’s Angelus Novus, facing the wreckage of the past, driven backwards into an unseen future.

Working with Yuk Hui’s reading of xuan (玄), where opposites are not two things but one, differently named, the work asks how we gaze across time, and how silenced violence in history approaches us from behind.

At a certain point, the orientation reverses. Past and future exchange places in the room. Between the two states, everything goes white and the voices lose their direction, an interval in which neither can yet be named.

The work runs as a cycle with no beginning and no end. Each return is not the same.

Workshop – A Body Exercise on the Perception of tIME

In Chinese, “the day in front” is the past; the day after tomorrow is “the day behind.” With this workshop, we set out to explore this orientation with our own bodies.

Through breathing exercises, guided meditation and simple movement, we explore what it feels like to face the past, and how memory and family history are contained in our body. The Workshop concludes with an exploration of the traces of our own individual life story in a non-linear way, using ink and water.

The workshop will be held in English.No prior experience needed.
